For many children being given a new topic in school, going through an example or two and then having to attempt questions on their own does not work. It does give them enough time to digest this new topic or give them enough practice before they are expected to go solo.
You probably find that your son or daughter can grasp a topic quite comfortably as long as they are given the appropriate time and opportunity to absorb these skills, which unfortunately cannot always be given to them in school.
To help students discover how good they actually are at maths, when they are given the chance to use their own style of learning, we have three approaches:
This gives them the opportunity to gain the knowledge and experience they need to consolidate their learning in their own time. With their online tutor working with them to give further explanations, they are able to proceed at their own pace and gain confidence in their abilities and gaining a full understanding of the topic.
The session is shared with another student who would be studying their own individualised program, which makes the experience less daunting and more enjoyable.
We find this works well for younger students who are yet to learn how to plan their own studies..
Our second approach is to have two half hour sessions each week, one towards the start of the week and one towards the end of the week, with exercises to be completed in between. A whole week can be a long time in maths, especially if a challenging topic is being quickly overtaken by a new topic in school.
This two half hour method allows your child to get to grips with one topic by spreading their learning throughout the week. They will build their skills, gain confidence and consolidate their learning before having to move on to another topic before they are ready.
This method works particularly well for pupils and early secondary pupils as it breaks topics down for them without being overwhelming.
Weekly Program
Our third approach is weekly program that can be accessed by your child each school day. Below is an example of how it would work.
Day One: Your son or daughter will meet up with their tutor online to discuss the maths topic they need help with and will work through examples with their tutor and receive exercises to complete themselves.
Day Two: They will have a short meeting with their tutor to re-visit the work they completed from the previous day and work through any issues they may have encountered. Your child will then receive further worked examples and exercises for them to complete.
Day Three: Again these will be worked through with their tutor who will ascertain their level of understanding of the topic. If further work is required in this area, the tutor will continue to ensure your child's understanding of the topic.
Day Four: The tutor will help your child consolidate their learning on this topic and then set a topic for the following week.
This is a 'bitesize' approach, which would usual take approximately fifteen minutes each day to complete.
Throughout the week, they will have their tutor available to help either by a zoom call or if they prefer, a video explanation, to overcome any hurdles they may be facing. They can access this help by just sending a text or an email to request help. They can even just have a chat with their tutor on the phone if that is all it needs. They do not have to wait until their next meeting, but know that help is always at hand when they need it.
We have found this to be an excellent way of not only helping your child build their confidence in maths, but to show them how to revise maths and other subjects they are studying. This approach often works well with students who are in their exam years.
All these approaches follow the curriculum your child is following, so your child will be consolidating their learning centred around their Exam Board's syllabus. Our tuition is tailored around your child's needs, not following a set program.

At this stage, your child is getting ready to make the leap from primary school to high school. This is a great time to make sure that they are really confident in handling basic maths skills. Many of our learners are keen to improve their skills in areas such as division, fractions, percentages and basic algebra.

It's a fact of life that the students in the upper sets are more motivated, hard-working and successful than those in the bottom set. The students in the upper sets are automatically being prepared for the National 5 exam in 4th year. This is the time to plug any knowledge gaps, get the essential skills and build maths confidence.

The vast majority of HE courses demand that their applicants have Nat 5 or GCSE maths and English. For this reason, lots of our learners start off just wanting to get maths 'out of the way' so they can concentrate on their preferred subjects. We find that a little bit of help at this stage can go a long way and it's surprising how many of our learners who were struggling at first go on to get an A.

In 2023, all of our Nat 5 students achieved a grade A.
Of course, not everyone plans to go on to Uni but, these days, everyone still needs maths. Whether it's for personal finance or to become a hairdresser or a builder, a mechanic or a shop manager, we all need to understand percentages, travelling times, income tax etc. Nat 5 Apps demonstrates to employers, training providers, apprenticeships and colleges that your son or daughter has these essential skills.

Higher maths is a great qualification for your son or daughter to have on their CV. If they are going to apply for university courses in subjects such as finance, engineering or IT, Higher Maths will very likely be a requirement.
Higher Apps is evidence of your child's higher level of understanding of maths if your son or daughter is following a more practical path towards their career.

Last year (2023) all of our higher students got an A or a B, this will open many doors for them in the future.

"Hi Richard, I wanted to let you know I got an A in maths!!!!. I just wanted to say thank you for everything because you have helped me over the last two years genuinely more than you know. You get to say 'I told you so' now because you were always saying I could get a A and I was convinced the best I could do was a C so thank you, as well, for always aiming high for me even though I couldn't aim high for myself. I am glad I never have to look as a surd again (ew) but will miss your banter on Thursdays."
